Trino Connector

The Gnok Trino connector enables federated queries that join Gnok-managed Iceberg tables with other Trino data sources. It communicates with Gnok via Arrow Flight SQL for efficient data transfer.

Installation

Client connectivity is set up by request

Connecting Trino to Gnok isn't self-service for new organizations yet; use Gnok Studio in the meantime. Email support@gnok.io to request client connectivity. Gnok support provides the endpoint, client package, and credentials for your organization.

Gnok support provides the Gnok Trino connector JAR and version-specific instructions when your client connectivity is set up. Install it into your own Trino environment using those instructions. To access Iceberg tables directly with the standard Trino Iceberg connector, see catalog integration.

Configuration

Create a catalog properties file using the Flight SQL endpoint, credentials, and TLS configuration provided for your organization. The host and port below are placeholders; ${ENV:GNOK_TOKEN} reads the token from the Trino server's own environment:

# etc/catalog/gnok.properties
connector.name=gnok
gnok.flight-endpoint=grpc+tls://flight.example.com:443
gnok.tls.enabled=true
gnok.auth.token=${ENV:GNOK_TOKEN}

All Properties

PropertyDefaultDescription
gnok.flight-endpoint—Gnok Flight SQL endpoint (required)
gnok.auth.token—JWT bearer token for authentication
gnok.tls.enabledfalseEnable TLS for the connection
gnok.tls.trust-store-path—Path to trust store for TLS
gnok.max-connections10Max concurrent connections to Gnok
gnok.timeout300sQuery timeout

Usage

-- Query Gnok tables from Trino
SELECT * FROM gnok.my_schema.my_table LIMIT 10;

-- Federated join between Gnok and PostgreSQL
SELECT g.*, p.name
FROM gnok.schema.orders g
JOIN postgres.public.products p ON g.product_id = p.id;

-- Metadata queries
SHOW SCHEMAS FROM gnok;
SHOW TABLES FROM gnok.my_schema;
DESCRIBE gnok.my_schema.my_table;

Predicate Pushdown

The connector pushes filters and projections down to the Gnok engine, minimizing data transfer. Pushed-down predicates benefit from Gnok's 4-level Iceberg pruning (partition, file stats, row group, page).

Limitations

  • Write operations (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) through the Trino connector are not supported — use Gnok's native protocols for DML
  • Complex Trino-specific functions are not pushed down and execute on the Trino side
